August 2008

Summer is still in full swing, but we’re already looking ahead to Spring. After all, we are just six months away from our first Spring 2009 releases, so what better time to announce our Spring list?

We will be delighted to bring you six new titles next Spring:
Fatal February
– February 1, 2009

Written by longtime Miami resident Barbara Levenson, who currently serves as a senior judge in the circuit court of Miami-Dade county, Fatal February introduces Mary Magruder Katz. For Mary, a half Jewish, half Southern Baptist criminal defense attorney, life gets completely complicated when she breaks off her engagement, gets fired from her former fiancé’s law firm, starts her own practice, and lands her first client, Lillian Yarmouth, the prime suspect in what’s become the Miami society murder of the year. Readers who like Janet Evanovich will love Barbara Levenson.
Rupture
– February 1, 2009

Written by Nashville resident and surgeon A. Scott Pearson, Rupture is an incredibly suspenseful, fast-moving tale featuring protagonist Dr. Eli Branch. Set in Memphis, Rupture unfolds at breakneck speed as Eli plunges headfirst into the world of deadly medicine.  Michael Palmer, New York Times best-selling author of The First Patient calls Rupture “top notch medical suspense that will have you turning pages deep into the night. Rupture is the best medical thriller I’ve read in a long time.”
Bahama Burnout
– March 1, 2009

Written by award-winning novelist Don Bruns, Bahama Burnout is the fifth release featuring rock and roll reporter Mick Sever.  This time, Mick heads to sunny Nassau, Bahamas, where he’s sent to get the inside story on Nassau’s Highland Studio. Highland Studio was known for pumping out hits that burned up the charts, till a devastating fire destroyed the studio. How the fire started—or whose body was found in the ashes—is a mystery. Rock and roll writer Mick Sever will find big trouble in this island paradise.
Spirit Horses
– April 1, 2009

Written by horse trainer Alan Evans, a dynamic new voice in the world of fiction, Spirit Horses is the story of Shane Carson, a gifted, nationally-recognized horseman. When a mysterious mustang shows up on his Tennessee farm, Shane learns that what we least expect sometimes leads to what we need most. How—and why —would one of the Spirit Horses, a rare, wild herd from the Shoshone reservation in Wyoming, find its way to Shane? According to Shelley Fraser Mickle, NPR commentator and author of Barbaro:  America’s Horse, “Alan Evans throws us in with horse whisperers, an ancient horse legend, and a mare with a secret destiny. Evans is an artful new storyteller, taking his readers on a spirited ride to a satisfying end.”
Purple Culture
– May 1, 2009

Written by Stephen L. Boehrer, a Wisconsin native who was ordained as a priest in Rome, Purple Culture explores a tough, but all-too-real question:  what happens when those we trust most commit the most egregious acts of betrayal?  An intelligent, provocative story about power and human nature, The Purple Culture is a true page-turner. Part legal thriller, part psychological drama, The Purple Culture demystifies the majestic and intriguing traditions of the Roman Catholic faith.
Little Lamb Lost

July 2008

We hope you all are having a wonderful summer!

We would also like to extend our congratulations to Deborah and Joel Shlian for a phenomenal launch of Rabbit in the Moon.  Check out what reviewers have to say about this exciting new summer read:

“The unrelenting pace will hook thriller fans”--Booklist

“This fast-paced story is full of ingenious plot twists and will keep you turning the pages.”--Bookviews.com

“A thoughtful and thought-provoking book”--Florida Weekly

“Deftly written and imaginative”--Midwest Book Review

“A fascinating novel. Compelling reading.”--Reviewing the Evidence

“A truly fantastic book. One you can’t afford to miss.”--Bookpleasures

Congratulations, Deborah and Joel!

Congratulations are also in order to Adam Gittlin, author of The Deal for a fantastic review in the June 6, 2008 issue of Hamptons magazine, in which reviewer Anne-Marie Guarnieri praises the novel and adds, “All that’s left to wonder about is who’ll play Jonah Gray in the sure-to-be-made film version.” If you’re looking for a tremendous summer read, don’t miss The Deal!

Now that we have released our three Spring/Summer 2008 books, we’ve been hard at work on another matter:  trying to find a name for a whole new genre of books.

Here’s our quandary:  Stuff to Die For by Don Bruns has received some phenomenal reviews, and it seems the novel’s protagonists, James Lessor and Skip Moore, twenty-something slackers/would-be entrepreneurs/amateur sleuths, really struck a chord with reviewers and readers. Numerous readers and reviewers described James and Skip as the Hardy Boys grown up, and Deadly Pleasures magazine said Stuff to Die For was “written with both the wit and the wisdom that seems to leave the actions, but not the minds, of most men once they hit thirty.”

But one article really got us thinking.  Jay MacDonald, book reviewer for the Ft. Myers News-Press, wrote this:  “Bruns may have stumbled upon a goldmine: a legitimate male counterpart to the hugely successful chick lit novels.” A legitimate male counterpart to the hugely successful chick lit novels?  That’s good stuff.

What on earth would we call this genre?  We put our heads together and made a few feeble attempts at coming up with a name.  Male-o-drama (ugh), Histery, as opposed to mystery (double ugh), and one other idea that is just too unpalatable to print. Frankly, we were stumped, so we sought suggestions from our readers, who absolutely did not disappoint!  Our sincerest thanks to everyone who submitted an idea. If you had an idea and haven’t yet submitted it, take heart:  there’s still time. Kindly drop an email to us at:  namethegenre@oceanviewpub.com . We will be taking suggestions until July 31, 2008 – just under one month shy of the release of Stuff Dreams Are Made Of, book two in the Stuff series on September 1.

As always, thank you for visiting www.oceanviewpub.com. Be sure to check back in August when we’ll announce our Spring 2009 list.  Until then, have a fantastic July!

January 2008

Happy New Year! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday, and wish you a wonderful and prosperous 2008.

With the New Year upon us, this seems like the perfect time to announce our upcoming Spring 2008 releases.  This year’s list includes:   St. Barts Breakdown by Don Bruns

Coming in March 2008
In St. Barts Breakdown Mick Sever is back with a new assignment:  interview music legend Danny Murtz.  One of the most successful producers in music history, Murtz has walls lined with gold and platinum records. But Danny Murtz’s closet is full of skeletons.

Known for producing an unbelievable string of hits, Murtz is also tied to a string of disappearances. Seems a number of Murtz’s romantic conquests have vanished into thin air. After his latest incident, Murtz conveniently retreats to his secluded St. Barts villa.  Before Mick Sever can hop a plane to the island, he’s nearly run down by a speeding car. Coincidence? Maybe, but hitmaker Danny Murtz and near misses go hand in hand.

If Danny Murtz has it his way, Mick will only need a one-way ticket to paradise. Because if Mick isn’t careful, his next column will be an obituary – his obituary. Sun, sand, and a psychopath:  it’s a deadly mix.

The fourth novel in Bruns’ series featuring rock & roll journalist Mick Sever, St. Barts Breakdown is a rocking, rolling, and riveting read.

The Deal by Adam Gittlin
Coming in May 2008

In The Deal, Gittlin, a commercial real estate executive in
New York, introduces Jonah Gray.

Everything about Jonah Gray screams success – expensive clothes, a Park Avenue penthouse, and a seven-figure income. A cutthroat, rainmaking New York City commercial real estate broker, Jonah craves opulence and power. He beds models, romps the globe on the weekends, and sees the world as his for the taking. Jonah Gray has it all. Or at least he had it all.

When Andreu Zhamosvky, a close family friend, presents him with the deal of a lifetime, Jonah jumps at the chance. All Jonah has to do is act quickly, invest half a billion dollars in prime NYC office buildings, and collect a huge payoff.

But all that glitters is not gold and this golden opportunity is anything but. Within days of signing on, Jonah is mysteriously thrust into the epicenter of an international and personal scandal.

Forced to explore a whole new territory where he can trust no one, and where danger, death, and deception lurk at every corner, Jonah will learn some painfully hard lessons about the quest for easy money.

Intricate, edgy and intense, The Deal moves faster than a prime property in a hot market.  According to Robert Dugoni, New York Times best-selling author of The Jury Master, “Gittlin is one to watch.”

Rabbit in the Moon by Deborah and Joel Shlian
Coming in June 2008

A richly textured, multilayered thriller, Rabbit in the Moon introduces Dr. Lili Quan.

San Francisco, 1989:  Forty years after Mao and his People’s Liberation Army set out to change China forever, Dr. Lili Quan prepares for a journey that will change her life forever. In her 27 years, Lili had rarely thought of herself as anything but an American. But to honor her mother’s dying wish that Lili “return home,” Lili reluctantly sets out for China.

For Lili, a passionate idealist, this will be an extraordinary trip filled with remarkable discoveries – from meeting and falling in love with Chi-Wen Zhou, a victim of the Cultural Revolution and zealous Taoist, to finding Dr. Ni-Fu Cheng, the grandfather Lili believed had died years before. But it was Dr. Cheng who had made the most remarkable discovery of all:  he discovered the secret to long life.

Dr. Cheng shares his discovery with Lili, which puts her life in jeopardy. As greedy and unscrupulous men vie for control of the most earth-shattering discovery of the century, Lili becomes a pawn in a deadly and dangerous international game. Before Lili Quan can hold the key to the future, she must unlock the deadly secrets of the past.

A rich tapestry of suspense, intrigue and discovery, Rabbit in the Moon is a moving and miraculous tale about finding hope – and finding home.

George Anders, New York Times best-selling author of Perfect Enough, and co-recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting, 1997, calls Rabbit in the Moon “a sweeping, ambitious book whose time has come. The stakes in this Chinese-American thriller are huge; the action is fast-paced and full of ingenious plot twists.”

We are excited about the release of each of these fantastic new novels and would like to invite you to check back for more updates.

We continue to get excellent feedback from our 2007 releases.  We are thrilled to announce that The Strand magazine has named Ladykiller by Lawrence Light and Meredith Anthony as one of the ten best books of 2007. Congratulations, Larry and Meredith!

James Rollins, New York Times best-selling author of The Judas Strain, calls Twisted Justice "a thriller that would've made Hitchcock proud…as riveting as it is relentless, driving toward a climax that will have you burning through pages late into the night.  Not to be missed!"

We emphatically agree; Twisted Justice is not to be missed. Congratulations, Pat!

We would also like to extend a warm welcome to the newest member of the Oceanview team, John Cheesman, our new project manager. We are so happy to have you onboard, John!

Please stay tuned for more updates in January.  From all of us at Oceanview, we wish you a safe, joyous, and happy holiday season.

November 2007

We would like to begin our November news update by offering congratulations to Ward Larsen, whose debut novel, The Perfect Assassin, has been awarded the Gold Medal in the 2007 Military Writers Society of America’s Awards Program’s fiction category. Congratulations, Ward!

We would also like to congratulate Pat Gussin, who will be recognized as one of four Women of Sarasota sponsors for this year’s A Novel Affair event in conjunction with the Sarasota Reading Festival.

We are also thrilled with the response to our first two Fall releases – Stuff to Die For by Don Bruns, and A Grave Breach by Jim Macomber.  Recent highlights include two fantastic Booklist reviews:

Stuff to Die For: “Will remind the reader of Tim Dorsey's cast of whacked-out characters but with the narrative voice and feel of Mark Twain's Huck Finn.” (Starred review)

A Grave Breach:  “A very impressive novel from an attorney and author with the right stuff to challenge Turow, Grisham, and the other top guns of the genre.”

     Congratulations, Don and Jim!

November 1 will mark the release of our third Fall 2007 title, Egrets to the Flames by the late Barbara Anton. We have been overwhelmed by the tremendous accolades and awards Egrets to the Flames has received, including lavish praise in an advance Publishers Weekly review, and winning the coveted Eaton Literary Agency’s Annual Book-length award. We are also delighted to announce that Egrets to the Flames has been selected as a Book Sense Notable for December 2007.

While we are saddened that Egrets to the Flames will be a posthumous release for Barbara Anton, who passed away in May of this year, we do feel that Barbara’s tremendous passion lives on in this phenomenal work.

In addition, Barbara’s philanthropic spirit is living on through Egrets to the Flames. Through Barbara’s generosity, Oceanview is arranging to have over 5000 hardcover first editions of Anton’s debut novel, Egrets to the Flames, donated to libraries nationwide in honor of Barbara’s cousin, Ms. Dorothy Matis Hoyman, a devoted librarian in the Temple University Library System. Barbara had so much respect and admiration for librarians and her generous gift not only honors Ms. Hoyman, but was also intended as her way of honoring those fine librarians for their dedication, hard work, and devotion in bringing worthy literature to those who browse their shelves.

On December 3, 2007, Oceanview and the Selby Public Library will host a tribute to Barbara Anton at the Selby Public Library Geldbart Auditiorium in Sarasota. An event to honor Ms. Anton and celebrate the release of Egrets to the Flames, the tribute will also mark the beginning of Ms. Anton’s library donation campaign.

We want to extend a special thanks to our friends at the Selby Public Library, and to Barbara’s friends and associates who have graciously lent their time, encouragement and support. Our heartfelt and sincere thanks to you all!

On December 1, we will celebrate the release of Twisted Justice by Pat Gussin as well as a trade paper edition of Pat’s Shadow of Death, Thriller Award nominee for best first novel.  Hailed by Reader Views as “a fast-moving, rollercoaster of a novel,” Twisted Justice, says James Rollins, New York Times best-selling author of The Judas Strain, is “a thriller that would’ve made Hitchcock proud.”

Please stay tuned for more updates in December, and as always, thank you for visiting!

October 2007

October, 2007 marks Oceanview’s three year anniversary and we would like to start by extending our heartfelt thanks to our authors and to all of the booksellers, librarians, industry professionals, readers and reviewers who have offered their support, encouragement and assistance.  We are proud of what we’ve accomplished in these past three years and are both appreciative and humbled by all of the support we have received. Thank you all so very much!

We would like to extend best wishes to George Foster, our exemplary designer, and Mary Franke on their recent nuptials.

September 2007

We at Oceanview hope you have had a wonderful summer. With summer coming to a close, it is time to turn our attention to ourFall 2007 releases.

We are pleased to announce our first Fall 2007 release, Stuff to Die For by Don Bruns.

Known as the master of the music murder mystery, Don Bruns (temporarily!) trades writing about the music business for writing about the moving business in this witty, gritty mystery about big ideas, big dreams – and big trouble.
