2009 |
|
Greetings from Oceanview!
May
finds us well into our Spring/Summer 2009 releases, and hard
at work on both our Fall 2009 and Spring/Summer 2010 lists.
But
before we get to the news about our most recent books, we’d
like to offer our congratulations to Martha Powers, whose
latest novel, Conspiracy of
Silence, has been named a finalist in the
Write Touch Readers’ Award’s romantic suspense category.
Way to go, Martha!
We are
thrilled to announce the May publication of
The Purple Culture by
Stephen Boehrer.
A
timely and controversial novel, The Purple Culture is
getting lots of attention, and has already received a number
of early rave reviews, including:
“Well written, interesting, and thought-provoking.” - The
Baryon Review of Books
“Although a profound legal thriller that extrapolates from
the headlines, The Purple Culture is much more. A
brilliant tale.” - Harriet Klausner
“Clean writing, as direct as a court transcription. It
doesn’t shy away from the issues.” - National Catholic
Reporter
“Boehrer tackles a difficult subject in The Purple
Culture trying to understand why upper-level clergy
would essentially condone deplorable behavior by its
priests. The book may cause some controversy, but at least
it will get people thinking. I look forward to reading more
from this talented author.” -
Fresh
Fiction
“Boehrer makes a compelling case. The book is an examination
of what the author calls the purple culture – a study of the
hierarchy of the institution. Boehrer contends it is the
hierarchy that is inherently flawed, not the church. And he
does it in a most convincing way. As a member of the
faithful, this is good news.” - Armchair Interviews
Congratulations, Steve!
We are
also thrilled to congratulate Alan S. Evans, author of the
newly-release Spirit Horses,
for a phenomenal launch event at Goerings Book Store in
Gainesville, Florida. Rumor has it that Alan’s signing may
have been the most well-attended event in the store’s
history. Congratulations, Alan!
We are
also pleased to share some early good news for Margaret
Fenton, author of Little Lamb
Lost, which we’ll release on June 1.
In an advance review in their April 6, 2009 issue,
Publishers Weekly says Little Lamb Lost author
Margaret Fenton “puts
her experiences as a social worker to good use in her
promising debut. With her fine ear for regional speech,
Fenton may do for Birmingham what Margaret Maron has done
for rural North Carolina.”
Congratulations, Margaret!
Please
stay tuned for more updates in June. Till then, have a
terrific month, and as always, thank you for visiting

January
2009 |
|
Greetings from
Oceanview,
and Happy New Year! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday
season.
We are so excited to see what 2009 holds in store. We have a
tremendous list of new titles coming your way, as well as
several trade paper releases of some of previously-released
hardcovers. Please stay tuned for updates and more
information.
We are just one month away from our first two 2009 Spring releases
– Fatal February by Barbara Levenson and Rupture
by A. Scott Pearson. Both Fatal February and
Rupture will be available nationwide on
February 1, 2009.
In Fatal February, Levenson, a longtime Miami resident who
currently serves as a senior judge in the circuit court of
Miami-Dade County, introduces protagonist Mary Magruder
Katz, a half Jewish, half Southern Baptist Miami criminal
defense attorney. Mary’s life starts to spin out of control
when a minor fender bender turns out to be an unlikely shot
from Cupid’s bow. Carlos Martin, the other car’s driver,
isn’t just a distracted driver; he’s distracting.
Carlos is charming, handsome, and mysterious. Hardly before
she knows what hit her, Mary breaks off her engagement,
jumps into a sizzling romance with Carlos, gets fired from
her former fiancé’s highbrow law firm, starts her own
practice, and lands her first client, Lillian Yarmouth. But
Lillian isn’t just any client; she’s the prime suspect in
what’s become the
Miami
society murder of the year. And it’s up to Mary to prove
Lillian’s innocence. Mary soon finds that this case, like
all matters of the heart, is anything but black and white.
And Mary has clearly stumbled onto something that has
someone seeing red. February may be the shortest month of
the year, but Mary’s got some long days--and nights--ahead.
This month could be a real killer.
Author Barbara Levenson delivers a winning
recipe in Fatal February. One part mystery, one part
romance, a scoop of hilarious, and a dash of tension, mixed
with the fantastically quirky Mary Magruder Katz yields a
delightfully charming debut. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, but
it doesn’t get much better than (Mary Magruder) Katz.
In Rupture, Nashville-based novelist and surgeon A. Scott
Pearson introduces protagonist Dr. Eli Branch. Well on
his way to realizing his dream of becoming a successful
surgeon-scientist, Eli Branch seems destined for academic
stardom. After years of research, Eli is on the cusp of a
groundbreaking discovery that could light the way for the
future. But, as Eli will soon learn, today’s medicine has a
very dark side. While investigating the suspicious death of
one of his patients, Eli uncovers an elaborate web of lies
spun by his late father, a longtime professor of anatomy at
Mid-South Medical College in Memphis. Instead of finding
answers, Eli only finds more questions–and more victims,
each meeting a sudden, violent end. Trapped in the paradox
of ending one life to save another, Eli will find that in
this life-or-death race against time, one false step could
be fatal.
According to Publishers Weekly,
“Pearson, himself an M.D., dramatically describes operating
scenes and lucidly explains medical issues, from aortic
device failures to stem cell therapy. Branch makes for an
appealing hero as he fights the steep odds against him.”
Michael Palmer, New York Times best-selling author of
The First Patient calls Rupture “top notch
medical suspense that will have you turning pages deep into
the night. Rupture is the best medical thriller I’ve
read in a long time.” Please be sure to check out these
wonderful new
Oceanview releases.
We want to offer congratulations to H. Terrell (Terry)
Griffin for a sensational launch of
Blood
Island.
From stellar reviews, to standing-room-only crowds at
signings, to a phenomenal 5-day blog tour,
Terry Griffin, according to the Longboat Observer,
“has done it again. Griffin’s third book promises to be
another bookshelf staple.” Congratulations, Terry, and
thanks so much for all of your hard work in making this come
together.
Congratulations are definitely in order to Don Bruns, who was
featured in the December issue of Sky Magazine, the
in-flight magazine of Delta Airlines. Featured as
December’s “mystery traveler,” Don is featured in a full
page interview that includes picture of Don playing guitar
on a sandy beach. Don’s Q+A session with Sky covers
research, the Mick Sever books, and a brief glimpse at Don's
March release, Bahama
Burnout.
Please visit Don’s web site –
www.donburnsbooks.com
– for a direct link to the full article. We are also
thrilled to announce that Blackstone audio has just released
an audio edition of Don’s
St. Barts Breakdown.
Congratulations, Don!
We were absolutely thrilled to receive news that three

list, while
Blood Island

Death Angel
by Martha Powers ranked #4 on the trade paperbacks
best-sellers list. Congratulations, Terry and Martha; we
could not be more proud!
Please stay tuned for more updates; we have a number of
terrific new books coming your way.

Greetings
from Oceanview! With summer just behind us, it’s time to
focus on our Fall 2008 book releases. And do we ever have a
fantastic list!
We are
pleased to announce the release of Stuff Dreams Are Made
Of by Don Bruns. The follow up to the multiple
award-winning Stuff to Die For, Stuff Dreams Are Made Of
heralds the return of lovable, bumbling would-be
entrepreneurs turned amateur sleuths James Lessor and Skip
Moore. Lessor and Moore, described
by reviewers and readers alike as what the Hardy Boys would
be as grownups are really more likely the hardly
boys. James and Skip are hardly kids, hardly adults, hardly
successful, but completely hilarious. A devilishly
funny, charming, and shrewdly suspenseful novel, Stuff
Dreams Are Made Of is just the right stuff for mystery
readers young and old.
Check out
these early reviews:
“Bruns
maintains a narrative tone that would have done Huck Finn
proud in this combination Andy Hardy adventure and
hard-boiled thriller.” --Booklist
“A
delightfully sinful sequel.”--Deadly Pleasures
“Another
excellent book by Don Bruns. His prose is crisp as ever, the
plot is gripping. Once you start reading this one, you won’t
put it down.”--Andrew F. Gulli, editor of The Strand
Magazine
We are
delighted to announce that Stuff Dreams Are Made Of
has been selected by IndieBound as an Indie Next List
Notable for October. Congratulations, Don…and a hearty
welcome back to James and Skip!
Also, it
is with great pleasure that we announce that Stuff to Die
For has been awarded the Silver Falchion Award at
this year’s Killer Nashville conference. The first annual
Silver Falchion Award was presented to mark the best
achievement in publishing to a Killer Nashville attending
author as voted on by his or her peers. Congratulations,
Don! And special thanks to A. Scott Pearson, Margaret
Fenton, and Don Bruns for attending this year’s Killer
Nashville conference.
We’re
gearing up for the forthcoming release of Stealing
Trinity the eagerly-anticipated follow up to Ward
Larsen’s The Perfect Assassin. Stealing Trinity will
be released on October 1, 2008, at which time we will
simultaneously release a trade paper edition of The
Perfect Assassin.
Rounding
out our Fall list is Conspiracy of Silence by Martha
Powers, along with a trade paper edition of Martha’s
blockbuster novel, Death Angel, both coming November
1, and
Blood Island by H.
Terrell Griffin on December 1.
Be sure
to check back for more updates on these fantastic
forthcoming titles.
We want
to extend big congratulations to Lawrence Light and Meredith
Anthony, authors of Ladykiller, which was recently
highlighted by Mysterious Matters as “gloriously
uncompromising” and one of the best independently-published
books around.
Click HERE to check out the article.
Another
note of congratulations goes to Todd Buchholz, author of
The Castro Gene, for an excellent review in the
Lincoln Journal-Star, which states, “There
are so many Castro and Kennedy novels. But this combination
is different and worth the wait. Read it.” Congratulations,
Todd!
Congratulations to Adam Gittlin for more terrific reviews of
The Deal, including:
“The
Deal is a fast paced financial thriller with a perplexing plot
that is riddled with schemes and conspiracies. A terrific
book, The Deal should be on everyone's reading list this
summer.” --Mysterious Reviews
“A
penetrating novel. The story provides a thrill a minute.” --
Spinetingler Magazine
“A fresh,
intense, read that will keep you on the edge of your seat…or
beach towel.” --Social Life
Magazine
Congratulations are also in order to Deborah and Joel Shlian
for more wonderful reviews of their timely and topical
Chinese-American thriller Rabbit in the Moon. Check
out some of this great praise:
“This
thriller is at times so fast-paced it leaves you breathless.
A thoughtful, educational read.” --Mystery
Scene Magazine
“A timely
Chinese-American thriller that takes the reader on a fast
paced tour of China.” --Round Table Reviews
“A very satisfying read. A totally new type of thriller. For a
fascinating change of pace pick up Rabbit in the Moon”
--MysteryReviewer.Blogspot.com

Summer is
still in full swing, but we’re already looking ahead to
Spring. After all, we are just six months away from our
first Spring 2009 releases, so what better time to announce
our Spring list?
We will be
delighted to bring you six new titles next Spring:
Fatal February
– February
1, 2009
Written by
longtime Miami resident Barbara Levenson, who currently
serves as a senior judge in the circuit court of Miami-Dade
county, Fatal February introduces Mary Magruder Katz.
For Mary, a half Jewish, half Southern Baptist criminal
defense attorney, life gets completely complicated when she
breaks off her engagement, gets fired from her former
fiancé’s law firm, starts her own practice, and lands her
first client, Lillian Yarmouth, the prime suspect in what’s
become the Miami society murder of the year. Readers
who like Janet Evanovich will love Barbara Levenson.
Rupture
– February 1, 2009
Written by
Nashville resident and surgeon A. Scott Pearson, Rupture
is an incredibly suspenseful, fast-moving tale featuring
protagonist Dr. Eli Branch. Set in Memphis, Rupture
unfolds at breakneck speed as Eli plunges headfirst into the
world of deadly medicine.
Michael Palmer, New York Times best-selling
author of The First Patient calls Rupture “top
notch medical suspense that will have you turning pages deep
into the night. Rupture is the best medical thriller
I’ve read in a long time.”
Bahama Burnout
– March 1, 2009
Written by award-winning novelist Don Bruns,
Bahama Burnout is the fifth release featuring rock
and roll reporter Mick Sever. This time, Mick heads to
sunny Nassau, Bahamas, where he’s sent to get the inside
story on
Nassau’s Highland Studio. Highland Studio was
known for pumping out hits that burned up the charts, till a
devastating fire destroyed the studio. How the fire
started—or whose body was found in the ashes—is a mystery.
Rock and roll writer Mick Sever will find big trouble
in this island paradise.
Spirit Horses
– April 1, 2009
Written by
horse trainer Alan Evans, a dynamic new voice in the world
of fiction, Spirit Horses is the story of Shane
Carson, a gifted, nationally-recognized horseman. When a
mysterious mustang shows up on his Tennessee farm, Shane
learns that what we least expect sometimes leads to what we
need most. How—and why —would one of the Spirit Horses, a
rare, wild herd from the Shoshone reservation in Wyoming,
find its way to Shane? According to
Shelley Fraser Mickle, NPR commentator and
author of Barbaro: America’s Horse, “Alan Evans
throws us in with horse whisperers, an ancient horse
legend, and a mare with a secret destiny. Evans is an artful
new storyteller, taking his readers on a spirited ride to a
satisfying end.”
Purple Culture
– May 1, 2009
Written by Stephen L. Boehrer, a Wisconsin
native who was ordained as a priest in Rome, Purple
Culture explores a tough, but all-too-real question:
what happens when those we trust most commit
the most egregious acts of betrayal? An intelligent,
provocative story about power and human nature, The
Purple Culture is a true page-turner. Part legal
thriller, part psychological drama, The Purple Culture
demystifies the majestic and intriguing traditions of the
Roman Catholic faith.
Little Lamb Lost
– June 1, 2009
Written by
lifelong mystery fan and Birmingham, Alabama, resident
Margaret Fenton, Little Lamb Lost introduces social
worker Claire Conover. Claire honestly believed she
could make a difference in the world until she gets the
phone call she’s dreaded her entire career. Now living in
her worst nightmare, Clare is about to uncover secrets that
could ruin lives – or end her own. A gripping tale about
lies, deception, and greed, Little Lamb Lost is
filled with plot twists and unexpected turns. Little Lamb
Lost is an outstanding read.
We are so
looking forward to bringing you each of these fantastic new
reads and want to extend a special welcome to each of our
new authors.
We also
wish to extend our thanks to everyone who took part in this
year’s ThrillerFest, the International Thriller Writers

We
hope you all are having a wonderful summer!
We are
pleased to announce that two titles from Oceanview
Publishing were among this year’s ForeWord Book of
the Year Award Winners. Stuff to Die For by Don
Bruns was named Gold Medalist in the Mystery/Suspense
Category while The Castro Gene by Todd Buchholz was
named Silver Medalist in the Mystery Category.
Congratulations, Don and Todd! We could not be more proud
of you.
We
would also like to extend our congratulations to Deborah and
Joel Shlian for a phenomenal launch of Rabbit in the
Moon. Check out what reviewers have to say about this
exciting new summer read:
“The
unrelenting pace will hook thriller fans”--Booklist
“This
fast-paced story is full of ingenious plot twists and will
keep you turning the pages.”--Bookviews.com
“A
thoughtful and thought-provoking book”--Florida Weekly
“Deftly written and imaginative”--Midwest Book Review
“A
fascinating novel. Compelling reading.”--Reviewing the
Evidence
“A truly fantastic book. One you can’t afford to miss.”--Bookpleasures
Congratulations, Deborah and Joel!
Congratulations are also in order to Adam Gittlin, author of
The Deal for a fantastic review in the June 6, 2008
issue of Hamptons magazine, in which reviewer
Anne-Marie Guarnieri praises the novel and adds, “All that’s
left to wonder about is who’ll play Jonah Gray in the
sure-to-be-made film version.” If you’re looking for a
tremendous summer read, don’t miss The Deal!
Now
that we have released our three Spring/Summer 2008 books,
we’ve been hard at work on another matter: trying to find a
name for a whole new genre of books.
Here’s
our quandary: Stuff to Die For by Don Bruns has
received some phenomenal reviews, and it seems the novel’s
protagonists, James Lessor and Skip Moore, twenty-something
slackers/would-be entrepreneurs/amateur sleuths, really
struck a chord with reviewers and readers. Numerous readers
and reviewers described James and Skip as the Hardy Boys
grown up, and Deadly Pleasures magazine said Stuff
to Die For was “written with both the wit and the wisdom
that seems to leave the actions, but not the minds, of most
men once they hit thirty.”
But one article really got us thinking. Jay MacDonald, book
reviewer for the Ft. Myers News-Press, wrote this:
“Bruns may have stumbled upon a goldmine: a legitimate male
counterpart to the hugely successful chick lit novels.”
A legitimate male counterpart to the hugely successful chick
lit novels? That’s good stuff.
What
on earth would we call this genre? We put our heads
together and made a few feeble attempts at coming up with a
name. Male-o-drama (ugh), Histery, as opposed
to mystery (double ugh), and one other idea that is
just too unpalatable to print. Frankly, we were stumped, so
we sought suggestions from our readers, who absolutely did
not disappoint! Our sincerest thanks to everyone who
submitted an idea. If you had an idea and haven’t yet
submitted it, take heart: there’s still time. Kindly drop
an email to us at:
namethegenre@oceanviewpub.com . We will be taking
suggestions until July 31, 2008 – just under one month shy
of the release of Stuff Dreams Are Made Of, book two
in the Stuff series on September 1.
As
always, thank you for visiting www.oceanviewpub.com. Be sure
to check back in August when we’ll announce our Spring 2009
list. Until then, have a fantastic July!

sharply written tale…definitely worth a read.” —Booklist
“fast-moving and so entertaining…an excellent read.” —The
Bismarck Tribune

‘American Psycho’ with a
John

excellent read.”

tumultuous seven weeks in Chinese history—Rabbit in the
Moon provides an vivid, eye-opening look at China, its
people, culture, and history. A must-read!

Happy New
Year! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday, and wish you
a wonderful and prosperous 2008.
With the
New Year upon us, this seems like the perfect time to
announce our upcoming Spring 2008 releases. This year’s
list includes:
St. Barts Breakdown
by Don
Bruns
Coming
in March 2008
In
St. Barts
Breakdown
Mick
Sever is back with a new assignment:
interview
music legend Danny Murtz. One of the most successful
producers in music history, Murtz has walls lined with gold
and platinum records. But Danny Murtz’s closet is full of
skeletons.
Known for
producing an unbelievable string of hits, Murtz is also tied
to a string of disappearances. Seems a number of Murtz’s
romantic conquests have vanished into thin air. After his
latest incident, Murtz conveniently retreats to his secluded
St. Barts villa. Before Mick Sever can hop a plane to the
island, he’s nearly run down by a speeding car. Coincidence?
Maybe, but hitmaker Danny Murtz and near misses go hand in
hand.
If Danny
Murtz has it his way, Mick will only need a one-way ticket
to paradise. Because if Mick isn’t careful, his next column
will be an obituary – his obituary. Sun, sand, and a
psychopath: it’s a deadly mix.
The
fourth novel in Bruns’ series featuring rock & roll
journalist Mick Sever, St. Barts Breakdown is a
rocking, rolling, and riveting read.
The
Deal
by Adam
Gittlin
Coming in May 2008
In The Deal, Gittlin, a commercial real estate
executive in
New York,
introduces Jonah Gray.
Everything about Jonah Gray screams success – expensive
clothes, a Park Avenue penthouse, and a seven-figure income.
A cutthroat, rainmaking New York City commercial real estate
broker, Jonah craves opulence and power. He beds models,
romps the globe on the weekends, and sees the world as his
for the taking. Jonah Gray has it all. Or at least he had
it all.
When
Andreu Zhamosvky, a close family friend, presents him with
the deal of a lifetime, Jonah jumps at the chance. All Jonah
has to do is act quickly, invest half a billion dollars in
prime NYC office buildings, and collect a huge payoff.
But all
that glitters is not gold and this golden opportunity is
anything but. Within days of signing on, Jonah is
mysteriously thrust into the epicenter of an international
and personal scandal.
Forced to
explore a whole new territory where he can trust no one, and
where danger, death, and deception lurk at every corner,
Jonah will learn some painfully hard lessons about the quest
for easy money.
Intricate, edgy and intense, The Deal moves faster
than a prime property in a hot market. According to Robert
Dugoni, New York Times best-selling author of The
Jury Master, “Gittlin is one to watch.”
Rabbit in the Moon
by
Deborah and Joel Shlian
Coming in June 2008
A richly textured, multilayered thriller, Rabbit in the
Moon introduces Dr. Lili Quan.
San Francisco,
1989: Forty years after Mao and his People’s Liberation
Army set out to change China forever, Dr. Lili Quan prepares
for a journey that will change her life forever. In her 27
years, Lili had rarely thought of herself as anything but an
American. But to honor her mother’s dying wish that Lili
“return home,” Lili reluctantly sets out for China.
For Lili,
a passionate idealist, this will be an extraordinary trip
filled with remarkable discoveries – from meeting and
falling in love with Chi-Wen Zhou, a victim of the Cultural
Revolution and zealous Taoist, to finding Dr. Ni-Fu Cheng,
the grandfather Lili believed had died years before. But it
was Dr. Cheng who had made the most remarkable discovery of
all: he discovered the secret to long life.
Dr. Cheng
shares his discovery with Lili, which puts her life in
jeopardy. As greedy and unscrupulous men vie for control of
the most earth-shattering discovery of the century, Lili
becomes a pawn in a deadly and dangerous international game.
Before Lili Quan can hold the key to the future, she must
unlock the deadly secrets of the past.
A rich
tapestry of suspense, intrigue and discovery, Rabbit in
the Moon is a moving and miraculous tale about finding
hope – and finding home.
George
Anders, New York Times best-selling author of
Perfect Enough, and co-recipient of the Pulitzer Prize
for National Reporting, 1997, calls Rabbit in the Moon
“a sweeping, ambitious book whose time has come. The
stakes in this Chinese-American thriller are huge; the
action is fast-paced and full of ingenious plot twists.”
We are
excited about the release of each of these fantastic new
novels and would like to invite you to check back for more
updates.
We
continue to get excellent feedback from our 2007 releases.
We are thrilled to announce that The Strand magazine
has named Ladykiller by Lawrence Light and Meredith
Anthony as one of the ten best books of 2007.
Congratulations, Larry and Meredith!
